The week before the semester started, I was part of something truly magnificient. Grontmij | Carlbro had invited students from all over the country for a week of Urban Planning Extravaganza. The point was to gather in small groups and work out a vision and a strategic plan for the traffic situation in Copenhagen in the year 2030. I was accepted along with around 20 other students, all magnificent people.

Our vison were to use the traffic system to create a better urban space, to decrease the environmental impact and to improve general health. The means to doing this were in short to improve conditions for bicycles and to prioritise public transport.

Slow | Motion Finger Plan

The bulk of the plan was to make a so-called Slow | Motion Finger Plan, in the spirit of the Greater Copenhagen Finger Plan from 1947. The main centers of urban life around Old Copenhagen is the four streets of Vesterbrogade, Nørrebrogade, Østerbrogade og Amagerbrogade. These streets are to create four fingers of urban life, where automotive traffic were to be reduced to a minimum. The driving lanes in the four streets were to be replaced with light rail system, and the surrounding streets to have a speed limit of 30 km/h. The light rail doesn't take up much space (~8-9m wide), and it would then be possible to widen both the pavement and the bicycle lanes.

As a supplement to these widened bicycle lanes (which are congested already today), we wished to establish a network of bicycle paths around Copenhagen. To achieve this, you could open up the courtyards of the urban blocks, and lead the bicycles through here. This would also have the effect to make these spaces open to the general public.

We do not see our plan as car-unfriendly. The automotive traffic is to be lead into traffic corridors along the current major streets. The new light rail system allows us to remove a lot of the buslines from the streets, and thereby increasing their capacity. This combined with a roadpricing system should vastly improve the conditions for automobiles in Copenhagen.

The week was a great experience. Besides the educating bits, Grontmij | Carl Bro really managed to it a social event, and I hope to see a lot of the people again. I would recommend these kinds of events to everybody who asked me. If they have half my experience it will still be fantastic.
